Benefits of Capsaicin & Eating Peppers
What Is Capsaicin?
As a molecular compound found in spicy peppers, capsaicin has no dietary content, such as calories or additional nutrients.
A multitude of studies have shown it’s a proven aid to weight loss, the fight against cancer and even chronic pain.
Eating spices and spicy foods (to your taste) is a great way to add flavor *and* health benefits to your diet!
Research has found that eating these spicy foods may lower body weight, speed metabolism, help burn fat and even suppress appetite
Capsaicin was isolated in 1846–& later turned into a synthetic for medicinal purposes
Why not use fresh ingredients every day with it and reap the benefits?
Here’s my Chef Tip: Every week buy fresh jalapeños:
- When home wash them well
- Preferably wearing gloves; break them down.
Cut off end; slice sides off (or cut in half)—and either way with a very sharp small knife cut out innards; and wash out all seeds and then carefully shave them down.
What you want is to store these completely cleaned de-seeded green halves in the fridge. When ready take out and mince finely. Add these to everything! I don’t let myself scramble an egg without adding these; great addition to cheese pizza slice, scrambled eggs, all salads, tuna salad etc.!
I keep some minced and some in strips. If you can handle more heat; then just wash and slice; but not all can handle the seeds.
That’s why the majority of Americans interact with pickled jalapeños; then you’re getting the seeds but the pickling has mellowed them.
Either way; get used to keeping jalapeños stocked and using them regularly! There’s no downside; adjust the heat to your taste based on how you clean them. But again, if you clean them thoroughly, you’re getting the capsaicin; but not too much heat.
If you don’t wear gloves do NOT touch your face or eyes under any circumstances.
Wash the strips thoroughly; store in Tupperware with moist paper towel; store minced as is; and use 1st….
(If you can handle serranos (Capsicum annuum); then use them as well. Practice on jalapeños 1st; as serranos are more delicate. But when cleaned thoroughly and minced finely add great flavor, a little heat and health benefits!)
